| | Railway Tours from Shenfield TravelEastern Rail Adventure This exciting tour utilises the splendid services of VIA Rail to take us through some of the most beguiling countryside of Eastern Canada. We begin in Halifax; Nova Scotia’s lively waterside capital, and after exploration of the enchanting southern shoreline, we board the train south into Quebec and the lovely Laurentian Mountains. A brief exploration of Montreal is followed by a relaxing stay in Sainte Adele, in the heart of the Laurentians at the lakeside Le Chantecler Hotel.
We continue our rail journey south to Canada’s capital city, Ottawa, whose natural beauty and modern amenities have made it one of the most striking capitals. We board the train once more for our final journey to the vibrant city of Toronto. It is from here that we have also included a visit to the natural wonder that is Niagara Falls. Your itinerary
- Day 1: London to Halifax via St.John's. We begin with Titan’s VIP Local Departure Service™ to London’s Heathrow Airport and your scheduled Air Canada flight to Halifax. On arrival our coach will transfer you to the Lord Nelson Hotel. The evening is free to stroll out and explore this intoxicating harbour front city, with its plentiful sea-food restaurants and vibrant nightlife.
- Day 2: Halifax. This morning we depart Halifax for a tour of Nova Scotia’s rugged southern shore. Our first port of call is Peggy’s Cove with the famous lighthouse standing proud on the granite shoreline, one of Canada’s most photographed landmarks and the only one in Canada serving as a post office with its own unique postmark. From Peggy’s Cove we continue our journey to Lunenburg, whose Old Town has had the honour of being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take the time to visit the Fisheries of the Atlantic Museum, based in an old processing plant and housing an aquarium, as well as interesting exhibits and live demonstrations. This afternoon we make our way back to Halifax where the remainder of the evening is free for you to relax and enjoy the capital of Maritime Canada.
- Day 3: Halifax to 'The Ocean'. A leisurely start, before transferring to Halifax railway station in the late morning to board the ‘Ocean’, VIA Rail’s overnight train to Montreal. We travel in the comfort of VIA’s First, or ‘Easterly’ class, with individual bedrooms, private facilities and included continental breakfast. Our journey takes us north through Nova Scotia to Moncton, New Brunswick, where the train is scheduled to stop briefly. Evening dinner is taken in the re-designed Dining Car. We continue to Quebec, and crossing the Gaspe Peninsular at Matapedia, make our way to the mighty St. Lawrence River. Following the river, we travel through the night to Rimouski and Montreal in the early morning.
Please note: An overnight bag will be required on the Ocean, as suitcases will be stored for the duration of the rail journey. VIA Rail have now adopted a non-smoking policy aboard the Ocean. - Day 4: 'The Ocean' to Sainte Adele. An early breakfast on board ‘The Ocean’, before our arrival at Montreal. We have arranged for a city tour this morning that will familiarise you with this wonderful city that manages to combine the best of the North American lifestyle with the culture and excitement of France. After an opportunity for lunch in any of the excellent restaurants in the city’s French Quarter, we head north for the idyllic Laurentian Mountain resort of Ste. Adele and our hotel for the next two nights, Le Chantecler.
Day 5: Sainte Adele. Our included buffet breakfast this morning comes with picture-post card views of Lake Morin and the surrounding wooded hillsides. There will be time to enjoy some of the hotel’s facilities, which include a 9-hole golf course, squash and tennis courts plus an indoor swimming pool. We take a leisurely drive through glorious woodland colours to Saint-Sauveur-des-Monts, with its charming turn of the century church and fashionable high street. We return to Le Chantecler with an opportunity for dinner in Sainte Adele or at the resort.- Day 6: Sainte Adele to Ottawa. Another excellent breakfast included at Le Chantecler this morning, before we set out for Montreal’s Central Station and our rail journey to Ottawa. Travelling first class in VIA 1 we can sit back and enjoy the scenery and Ottawa is soon in our sights as we arrive just before noon into Canada’s capital city. Our coach awaits to guide us on a tour of Ottawa, a city with a rich cultural landscape with historic Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and the myriad of museums and galleries. We transfer later this afternoon to our hotel for the next two nights, the Crowne Plaza Hotel.
- Day 7: Ottawa. Today we are free to discover for ourselves the charm and sophistication of Ottawa. Your tour manager will be on hand to offer you advice on the best way to enjoy the city, perhaps with a visit to the Parliament Buildings or a cruise on the Rideau Canal. Whatever you decide, the city will not disappoint you. With so many varied and interesting things to see and do, as well as the world class shopping and dining opportunities that are on offer.
- Day 8: Ottawa to Toronto. This morning we take our leave of Ottawa and join VIA Rail’s lunchtime service to Toronto. First class seats have been confirmed and while we relax and enjoy the vistas passing us by, lunch with drinks will be served. Mid afternoon we pass through Kingston gateway to the beautiful 1,000 Islands and then Toronto’s distinctive skyline is soon in view. The CN Tower stands sentinel-like over the city as we arrive in the city’s Union Station. Our coach will transfer you to the Metropolitan Hotel. The rest of the evening is free for you to make your first discoveries of the city. A trip to the top of the CN Tower is a must before you leave this vibrant city. Why not make the 1,700 feet journey tonight and see the sun spectacularly set over Lake Ontario before the city is lit in a dazzling display of lights. The world’s tallest free standing tower houses the Top of Toronto revolving restaurant for a special treat, as well as the sections of glass flooring that will allow you to discover one of the most unique views you will ever experience.
- Day 9: Toronto to Niagara to Toronto. This morning we have arranged for a brief city tour of Toronto to introduce you to the exciting elements that the city has to offer. The city is full of contrasts from the modern shopping malls and skyscrapers to the restored 19th century buildings and Harbour Front. This area, once the old docks, has been reclaimed into an imaginative selection of shops, restaurants and seating areas offering fine views. After our tour we depart Toronto for a visit to Niagara Falls, one of the natural wonders of the world. There will be time for you to enjoy the enthralling, if wet, optional ride on one of the Maid of the Mist boats that takes you directly under the Falls. There is also the chance to experience an optional helicopter flight, described by some as the experience of a lifetime. We return to Toronto early this evening.
