Coastal Voyages

Your flight will take you via Oslo to Tromsø, the
Capital of Arctic Norway. You then voyage south to Trondheim and wonder at
the spectacular scenery of the Norwegian coast as the ship weaves its way
through the network of the Lofoten Islands.
Tromsø, located north of the Arctic circle, with its
excellent restaurants and lively bars has been the starting point for many
polar expeditions. Today it is the ideal port from which to begin your own
voyage of discovery.
Jagged snow-topped peaks rise sharply from the sea:
the Lofoten Islands. A chain of islands 75 miles long and home to the
fishing communities which have helped to make Norway famous as a sea-faring
nation. Painted boathouses line the harbours, bird colonies populate the
cliffs, beaches and fjords pass by. Approaching from the north, you will
come face to face with the peaks of the Lofoten Wall, a 160km stretch of
mountains.
Legend has it that Vågekallen, Troll King of Lofoten
had a son, Hestmannen, who saw seven princesses bathing naked in the sea.
Not surprisingly he saddled his horse (not having the luxury of the coastal
ship) and gave chase to the most beautiful – Lekamøya. As the sisters fled
south he fired an arrow after them. The king of the Sømnafjellet, awakened
by the commotion, threw his hat into the path of the arrow at the instant
the sun rose and all the trolls becaume petrified. The seven sisters can be
seen to this day as a line of seven mountains. Look out for other characters
from the saga as the ship sails through this land of legends; the king’s
hat, still with the hole made by the arrow is Torghatten, south of
Brønnøysund, and north of Rørvik you may see the beautiful Lekamøya.
The myth is also said to explain why trolls are not
seen during the day as the moment the sun appears they will turn to stone!
Our journey is completed in the original capital city
of Norway, Trondheim. A tour of the city with its fine examples of medieval
and impressive wooden buildings is included. The 18th century Stiftsgården
Palace and the magnificent 14th century Nidaros Cathedral, considered one of
the grandest in northern Europe, cannot be missed.
