Walking The Somme

Your itinerary

 

      ●  Day 1     

Travel from your FREE local joining point and on to your hotel in Amiens.

      ●  Day 2     

Walk 1: We begin in Auchonvillers to see the cemetery and sight of the dressing station, then follow the route taken by poet, Edmund Blunden up on the Hawthorn Ridge. We examine the fighting for Beuamont Hamel on 1st July 1916 and end at Newfoundland Park, with its preserved trenches.

Walk 2: We start at Blighty Valley Cemetery and walk through Authuille Wood to the front lines, seeing the sights of the Leipzig Salient we then see Thiepval Memorial and visit the new Visitors Centre.  B

      ●  Day 3     

Walk 3: We visit Mametz Wood, seeing Dantzig Alley Cemetery and the Memorial to the 38th (Welsh) Division. We then walk to the Flat Iron Copse Cemetery and end at Bazentin-le-petit.

Walk 4: From Bazentin to High Wood, via Crucifix Corner to the London Cemetery on the edge of the wood. We see the various unit memorials, then follow the infamous Wood Lane down to Longueval. B

      ●  Day 4    

Morning at leisure or join an optional excursion to the Tommy Bar at Pozieres, virtually a museum, with a large system of trenches in the garden. We study the role of the Australians seeing the near-by memorial and Gibraltar Bunker site.

Walk 5: We focus on the battlefield between Mouquet Farm and Courcelette. We start at the Farm and then walk to Courcelette British Cemetery, where we look at Canadian attack of Courcelette. We then visit the Sunken Lane and the sight of a former German Cemetery, seeing a unique German Memorial on the Somme. B

      ●  Day 5     

Return to U.K. B
