Battlefields

Bomber Country

Lincolnshire has a vast aviation heritage and is renowned as the ‘Home of the Royal Air Force’. The county’s flat open countryside made it ideal for development of airfields during the Great War, and during World War II Lincolnshire become the most important home of Bomber Command. Combining visits to museums and trailing some of the former RAF stations in the area, our fascinating weekend itinerary bears witness to the courage, determination and bravery of the men and women who served our country in more turbulent times.

Your itinerary

  • Friday:  We make our way towards ‘Bomber country’, nickname for Lincolnshire during WWII, We pass RAF Wittering, training station for the Hawker Harrier, and Woolfox Lodge, a chilling reminder of the ‘Cold War’, before arriving at the County Hotel. After dinner we have a fascinating talk and slide show from our local aviation historian.
  • Saturday:  This morning we visit the Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirby, where the famous Avro Lancaster ‘Just Jane’ was based, along with an award winning World War II collection of memorabilia (admission included). This sfternoon we take a trip to the Newark Air Museum (admission included), situated on the site of RAF Winthorpe, which offers a superb insight into the history of aviation through its magnificent display of 58 aircraft and cockpits.
  • Sunday:   Today we head for RAF Digby, an operational signals base, for a guided tour of the now restored Operations Room. Our tour also includes visits to the war memorials at Skellingthorpe and Bardney as well as RAF Scampton, home of the Red Arrows, and the little grave of Guy Gibson’s dog who died on the night of the Dambusters raid. Our final visit of the day takes us to Woodhall Spa and Thorpe Camp (admission included), a museum dedicated to 617 squadron, which has been converted from the old NAAFI of what was RAF Woodhall Spa.
  • Monday:  Our return journey takes us via a number of additional memorials, rounding off a wonderful weekend.

IMPORTANT NOTICE - Visits to RAF operational bases are subject to security restrictions, and visits may be withdrawn without prior notice.
