Gateway to the ArticAn enigmatic city, some 200 miles above the Artic Circle, and the departure point for countless Polar expeditions. Fascinating museums bear witness to some of these exploits, and also give an insight into the local Sami culture. Other attractions include the stunning Artic Cathedral, and the fascinating Polaria Centre. There are picturesque old wooden houses, quaint shops, cosy cafes and bars, plus a wide range of excellent restaurants – many serving delicious Artic Specialities. An enjoyable excursion can be taken throughout the year (except Saturdays) travelling northwards by bus through the spectacular Lyngen Alps and returning to Tromso on the Coastal Voyage. It is possible to see the Midnight Sun in Tromso from 20 May to 22 July. The Northern Lights can be seen between October and March, subject to suitable weather conditions. In the period between 27 November to 15 January the sun is below the horizon, and Tromso is bathed in a mystical ‘blue light’. Winter activities in Tromso include husky-safaris, horse-drawn sleigh rides, ice-fishing and cross-country skiing.
