Husky Mushing TourReturn to main Arctic Circle page The Adventure Of A Lifetime!
This literally is a story of one man’s best friend providing a totally
different experience and holiday. With a team of five husky dogs, who will
be your constant companion for a week, you will trek through the fells
enjoying the peace, tranquillity and serenity of the landscape, with only
the sound of the dogs and sled.
Day 1 - Sunday
Arrive in Rovaniemi and transfer to the hotel in Sodankyla. Meet the
guide and the other members of the safari, and compare expectation of
the days to come. Instructions will be provided in relation to your
projected route for the week and general information in relation to the
huskies and sledding. We have an early start tomorrow and suggest an
early night! Overnight: Sodankyla - Hotel
Day 2 -
Monday Transfer
to a husky farm for a visit around the kennels to learn how to harness
the dogs and rig a team, feed and care for your team. Following further
instruction, preparation and lunch, you will embark on a 4km training
run before setting off into the fells around Luosto. On arrival at
tonight’s cabin, it is time to take on your responsibility to care and
feed your team of dogs and build a relationship, as they are your
responsibility and transport for the next 5 days. Overnight: Wilderness
cabin. Day 3 to 6 -
Tuesday to Friday
Each day will begin with seeing to the needs of your team of dogs. One
of our days’ thrills is the initial departure from the overnight resting
place, your dogs are well rested and raring to go. The tie rope released
and secured, one foot off the brake, then the other and away you go,
your team of dogs pulling you through the beautiful fells and forests of
the Luosto region, and across the frozen lakes. Lunch stops will be a
feature, maybe at a traditional Lappish kota or simply beside the track
with the guides quickly turning a snowy clearing into a comfortable,
protected meal area. One of the delightful aspects of this safari is the
loyalty shown by your dogs, after only a couple of days they will
understand that you are their master and carer, they will love you for
it and the contact made during rest stops will be enjoyed by you both.
Overnight: Wilderness cabin or choose to try a snowhole.
Day 7 - Saturday
As the week draws to an end, you will
make your way back to the Husky farm to return all equipment and have
lunch. Sadly its time to bid a sad farewell to your team of dogs
followed by a visit to the adjoining reindeer farm for a short reindeer
sleigh ride before returning to Sodankyla, knowing that you truly have
had the adventure of a lifetime with a man’s best friend. Day 8 - Sunday
Relax in Sodankyla before returning to
the airport for your journey home.
